Hodgdon H4198 Smokeless Powder 1 Lb
by HODGDON , IMR & WINCHESTER
H4198 This Extreme Extruded propellant has gone through some changes since its inception, all the time maintaining the same important burning speed of the past. The kernels were shortened for improved metering and necessary elements were added to make it extremely insensitive to hot/cold temperatures. H4198 is outstanding in cartridges like the 222 Remington, 444 Marlin and the 7.62 X 39. Grain shape is extruded (stick)

Great for the 45-70 with cast bullets. Also works well with the 300grain JHP. One of my favorite powders for the 45-70.

This is the powder for 50 Beowulf and 400gr Winchester Platinum Tip bullets, of course other 400gr bullets will work. 48.8gr H4198 2.180 oal Large pistol primer Very accurate!!!

EXCELLENT grouping results with both .444 Marlin and 45-70 with cast bullets. Has worked well — 1.6″ @ 100 yds in both Marlin levers and Gibbs 45-70 bolt action. Also excellent for use in .450 Marlin

This is probably among the best powders for use in the Marlin 444 cartridge. I have used it with 240 grain Remington JSP, Hornady 265 and 300 grain bullets with excellent performance. I load them at about 7% less than max loads, all worked well at 100 yards. The recoil is as expected from a big bore rifle, but this one hurts a little more. My next choice would be IMR 4895, which works just as well for the 240 grain bullets. I usually get my loading data from the manufactures web site or booklet, but the Lee Reloading Manual is my best reference.
